Responding to Security Threat by Enhancing Visibility of the PAI CHAI University’s Internal Network

Customer

In 1895, the school was founded by the missionary Henry Appenzeller in 1885 at the direction of Emperor Go Jong in Joseon period. At that time it was known as Baejae Hakdang, which might be rendered as "Pai Chai Academy. In 1955, the school was merged with Daejeon Boyukhakwon (orphanage) founded by the same missionary to establish the college under Baejae Hakdang and become a general university that includes college, graduage school and research institute.

Challenges
In Pai Chai University, PCs that lots of students were using, IP sharing routers randomly installed inside and many unrecognized smart devices access to them generated various traffic. For this reason, we had been highly vulnerable to our internal networks and suffering disruptions so far. In addition, managing switches for repair and maintenance of network so hard that we couldn’t find exactly where the disruption occurred.
Therefore, we asked PIOLINK for the solution that enables the management of IP used by our administration staff and students, access security and switch management all at once.
Solution
Pai Chai University introduced PIOLINK Access Security Solution.
This solution is composed of TiFRONT Security Switch and TiManager Pro Management. The simply replacement of the previous switches (L2/L3) easily and successfully enabled the protection of our internal networks from malicious traffic, the monitoring of traffic use and the management of equipment and host.
Benefits
After the switch replacement, the malicious traffic to the upper network of our internal network was reduced significantly, which allowed us to offer more stable services.
PIOLINK’s solution also automatically blocked roofing caused by our complicated cable structures and provided the central visibility.
In particular, we didn’t change the network structure in order to introduce the new IP management system. Instead, simply by replacing switches, we could secure the visibility of the access devices.
Moreover, even if students access the school’s internal network through individual IP sharing routers installed, the network management is easy thanks to PIOLINK’s NAT detection that blocks the access of unauthorized devices.
Under this solution, we can keep monitoring the general state of traffic use, including who, when, where and how much traffic is transferred. As a result, we prioritized the sources of excessive traffic use such as video and stopped a slowdown in the internal network.
